Where my photos end up: Mixed Martial Arts Fight Night Pics

Over the course of 3 years, I toured a mixed martial arts schools' 30-something locations in the NY/NJ/CT area. After 5 different marketing focused photos shoots, this is absolutely INCREDIBLE... The images they chose to display are incredible and what they're doing with them is just awesome.   These images are about the size of an average loft space wall. And to see my photos end up like this.. I feel so proud.

Would love to do this for more and more martial arts schools in our area.

I need nothing else to keep moving forward. They are proud of the work I did for them. And I am proud of what I was able to do...

her grace is as fierce as her kick... and i photographed her

One of my favorite photos.

She's a beautiful force to be reckoned with. In and out of the ring.

Ever meet people that you just know will leave a lasting impression...

She wasn't just a fighter to me. She wasn't just another client for me. She became a friend, an inspiration. She became someone that I can look up to. Hard work and dedication is like breathing for her. "It doesn't feel like work to me. It's fun. It's what I really love to do" is what she said to me on the day we had  our first official photo shoot. Her community was devastated by Hurricane Sandy. She was not exempt. But not even Mother Nature could stop her perseverance.  She continues to train for her upcoming fight at Combat at the Capitale in November. And she holds classes for her students at a temporary location so that they can concentrate on themselves at least a couple of times a week while their lives are pieced back together.

Her name is Andrea DeAngelo...  and I photographed her.

they stand with pride... and i photograph them

One of my favorite photos.

It's been a while since my last post. I apologize. These mean a lot to me and I will struggle to keep up with them.

I have been awesomely busy with touring the TSMMA schools and capturing the essence of what it feels to train at each location. It's been amazing, heart warming, challenging and fulfilling. I have at least one favorite moment from each school. But this photo sums them all up. Pride. Tomorrow is July 4th 2012 and we all have our own reasons of why we love where we are. This photo, of a young boy standing at attention for his Sensei, with the flag above his head, speaks volumes to what it feels like to train at this school, and all the others....

Thank you TSMMA Tom's River for giving me this photo. It will stay in my hearts eye for a very long time.

today i said the words out loud… in a complete phrase…for the very first time

today i said the words out loud… in a complete phrase…for the very first time

"my name is chastity, and i am a mixed martial arts photographer"

holy heckarooskies!!! what the………..

you would think that, considering i've been doing this for some time now, i should have said that phrase at least 200 dozen times. but nope.. i haven't.  in fact i rarely do…. today was the VERY FIRST TIME that i said it, in that form. and i said those words to probably the most important group of people i will ever have the chance to meet… i said them to ....

junior high school kids

a couple of months ago i was asked by Mike Burke to speak to some of his students at a local junior high school. what i failed to understand at the time was… this was going to be a VERY BIG DEAL TO ME. i will have met with over 100 students over the course of this day, speaking for a total of over 2 hours, and it was a time for me to share with them what it took to get to where i am. by no means am i a famous, world renowned artist….yet…:)  but rather…i spoke to them, grounded, as someone who lived in their town, someone who was real, not untouchable, with  a heart and courage as big as a boulder. i spoke to them simply as me. and it was great !!!

i got to display the photos that hang on the walls in my own house. i got to show them the 2 slideshows on a huge projection screen that we created for our TSMMA warriors. and the best part… i got to bring our very own Joshu Stephen Regman with 3 of his title belts!! they went crazy for him!

mike and the school staff thanked us endlessly for coming out to support the community and talking to the kids. but what they all don't realize is that WE are indebted to them. this was more beneficial to me than it was for the school. i got to share my love. i got to hopefully influence a child's life. i hope i was able to inspire them to dream big! they got to see Joshu - a true champ. they got to hear what it took to be a dedicated champion in and out of the ring. we both echoed each other about the importance of focus, determination, discipline and a non-quitting spirit.  we spoke about the importance of education and dreaming big. we spoke about why we do what we do… in it's very simplest form.. because it makes us HAPPY…

i want to give a huge thank you to mike burke and the hubabrd school staff for welcoming us they way that they did.

i want to give a great thanks to sensei holland for sitting with me for an hour yesterday and helping me think through what we needed to chat about…

mega thanks to sensei querido... he started this whole mma photo taking thing!!! :)

i owe endless thanks to Joshu Stephen Regman for taking the time out of his very busy training schedule, even though he is preparing for a month of upcoming back to back fights.  Thank you Joshu.. sincerely and truly.

but i owe the biggest thanks to the hubbard junior high school kids for giving me the opportunity to meet with them today, share my journey and giving me their undivided attention and respect.

it's an intense fighter coach moment… and i photographed them

One of my favorite photos.

To the average person, this photo is JUST a photo. A guy in head gear and gloves ready to go into the ring. Giving his coach a 'glove shake'.

But to me.. this is an EPIC moment.  It reminds me of my ALL TIME FAVORITE fighter coach moment, the first one I ever captured. I am still waiting on the right time to bring THAT photo out…

As I watch their journeys unfold on fight night, there's a lot of emotion and intensity that goes into the hours leading up to the bout. There's the wrapping, the stretching, the warm up… then there is THIS VERY MOMENT… The moment when a fighter meets his coaches eyes, the LAST set of eyes he looks into before he steps into battle and he is reminded of the support he has behind him. He is reminded of his goal. He is reminded of who helped him get here and why! It's in that moment that the coach says his final words of encouragement and lets his fighter know that THIS IS HIS TIME.

I look into Roger's eyes and I can see the determination. I look at Shihan's profile and I can see the pride. I look at their hands, glove to glove, and I know that Roger isn't going into that ring alone, he's going in there with Shihan Simpson, Sensei Villafane, his coaches, his school, his training-mates and all his fans that came out to support him that night.

But no matter who else is around, or what else is going on, having the people he trusts the most… IN HIS CORNER, makes it all worth it.

Whether it happens in the ring, or just before, THIS VERY MOMENT is probably one of the most intense and personal and special moments that I AIM to capture at every fight night for every one of the fighters I cover.

his strength extends beyond his power... and i photographed him

One of my favorite photos.

It was sure to be an exciting night of Professional Fights. And for TSMMA it definitely was.  I remember watching both Sensei Holland and Sensei Hall warm up with Shihan and admiring their strength. Their accuracy. Their agility. But, when Sensei Uriah Hall hit the pads... the ROOM SHOOK! The sound was deafening and the pulse was terrifying. That was my first time hearing the crash that explodes from his fists. It was also my first time photographing him in action. And it was a photographers' dream fight come true. He gave a great performance, great extensions, great movement, all of which my camera loved.

He won that night by submission via heel-hook.  But the part of his fight I remember the most...? After his submission victory, his opponent was still down on the ground getting examined by doctors... Yes Sensei Hall celebrated. They all do. Yes he gave his fans the victory screams and waves they love to see. Yes he thanked his coaches as they patted him on the back and yelled how great his talent shined.

But when he was done, Sensei Hall walked over to his opponent and said "Are you alright? I'm sorry" in the most sincere tone you could hear. Those 5 words were louder than the hundreds of fans cheering in the stands.

...

There is a GREAT deal of respect and responsibility that comes along with being an MMA warrior. One wreck-less, untrained move and one fighter can hurt another fighter in a life threatening way. Mixed Martial Artists are amazing athletes with the most admirable, respectful characters you can ever have the privilege to meet.

It takes a lot of strength to cause another fighter to submit. But it takes even more strength to show the respect and sincerity he did to his opponent that night.

And I know I'm lucky...I get the privilege to hear those words more often that you would think. :)

he knocked his opponent to the floor... and i photographed him

One of my favorite photos.

It was my first time photographing Professional Fighter Jimmie Rivera and it was a great fight to watch. I love that his opponent is on his way down.  A few moments later, his opponent wouldn't get up. Stay tuned for that photo.
